Dricus Du Plessis defied the odds to become the world Middleweight champion. Du Plessis beat out Sean Strickland throughout five rounds to become the UFC middleweight champion. Since Israel Adesanya lost his Middleweight championship strap last year, there are many contenders in the world now, and Khamzat Chimaev is one of them. Khamzat has been on a tear since entering the company, but as it turns out, Du Plessis does not rate him very highly.
Khamzat Chimaev is considered one of the most dangerous fighters on the Middleweight roster. He has beaten several of his opponents in the first round itself.
Dricus Du Plessis gives his take on Khamzat Chimaev
World middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis is still looking for his opponent for his first title defense in the company. He won his title against the formidable Sean Strickland. Strickland was the heavy favorite going into the bout, but he didn’t come from South Africa to MMA dreamland, the UFC, to not win the title. When asked about Khamzat Chimaev Du Plessis, he had an interesting response. He said,
He (called out) Jon Jones. Who takes that guy seriously anyways?
Dricus Du Plessis made it clear that he does not rate Khamzat highly or take him seriously. Khamzat is set to take on Robert Whittaker in the Octagon in the month of June. If Chimaev is to win his bout against Whittaker, he’s going to get a shot at the title. Dricus Du Plessis will have to fight the man if he emerges victorious in his next bout. Khamzat last fought Usman and won an impressive fight.
It was surprising to hear what Dricus thinks about the trailblazing challenger. Almost everyone in the company rates Khamzat very highly, and Du Plessis, being the champion, will have to face the champion sooner rather than later. Chimaev is yet to lose inside the octagon, and Du Plessis is also unbeaten. It’ll be interesting to see who wins the fight between the duo.
