Sean O’Malley, the flashy bantamweight champion, is gearing up for a monumental fight at UFC 306. This event isn’t just any ordinary bout; it’s O’Malley’s chance to cement his status as the UFC’s brightest star and retain his belt.
The Sphere in Las Vegas will host this historic card. Dana White has dropped a cool $20 million on production for this one-time spectacle. O’Malley’s been on a meteoric rise since his Contender Series days. Now, he believes he is very close to becoming the face of the UFC.
“I think I’m very close. I think Conor’s still got one more big fight in him because of the big question mark. Can Conor come back, can he actually beat [Michael] Chandler? So I think Conor’s got one more huge fight. If he goes out there and loses his next fight, it will be like six in a row…I would assume he goes out there, he loses, I’m there. I’m the guy. I’m the No. 1,” said O’Malley at the UFC 306 media day interview.
The bantamweight champ has a point about activity. While McGregor’s been nursing injuries, O’Malley’s been busy. He’s racked up 16 fights since 2016. And let’s not forget McGregor’s age factor. At 36, he isn’t looking to take more punishment.
Sean O’Malley has got to get past Merab Dvalishvili first. No easy task, that. Dvalishvili is a grinding machine who doesn’t know the meaning of “quit.” And if ‘Suga’ goes out and finishes ‘The Machine,’ he will cement his status in the bantamweight division and get closer to becoming the face of the UFC.

In a blistering post on social media, O’Malley didn’t pull any punches. He called McGregor many names. He didn’t stop there as he tore into McGregor’s fighting skills too.
“Conor isn’t in anyone GOAT talk. Entertainment yes but skills, no. Has a really good left hand. Shit Cardio. Weak Jits. Decently athletic. Mentally weak. Drug addict, needs rehab. 1-4 last 5 fights. Still fan tho. Hope toe heals up,” said O’Malley via X.
O’Malley’s timing is interesting. McGregor has been out of action for a while now. He’s nursing injuries and dealing with personal issues. But O’Malley has got his own skeletons in the closet. And this beef shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
