Sports fans are like loyal fans at concerts, always cheering for their favorite artists as the true headliners of the sport’s stage. In the UFC, the debate over the greatest fighter is always buzzing with names. Recently, when Sean O’Malley was asked about his pick for the top fighter, he named Islam Makhachev as the greatest, sidelining Jon Jones, and shared his reasons for the choice.
He’s all over the media scene with Sean O’Malley getting ready for his UFC 306 showdown with Merab Dvalishvili. During a sit-down with MMA influencer Helen Yee, she asked him who he thinks is today’s greatest combat sports athlete. Without thinking twice, O’Malley gave the nod to the Lightweight champ Makhachev, placing him at the top of the list.
In his words, “Greatest fighter right now? Probably Islam (Makhachev).” After which Yee threw Jones’ name. O’Malley shared how Jones took the heavyweight title from Cyril Gane last year and has stayed on the sidelines since then. On the other hand, Makhachev has been making moves, winning the lightweight belt and defending it three times, setting a new record. So, as per him, Makhachev is greater than Jones.
Dana White definitely wouldn’t agree, as he’s become a meme for his nonstop praise of Jon Jones. He refuses to accept that Jones isn’t the pound-for-pound champ, highlighting how biases can skew one’s views more than the facts. Meanwhile, Jon Jones welcomed Dana White’s praise and took the time to respond to the skeptical fans.
Jon Jones Shuts Down Critics For Choosing Stipe Miocic
Recently, Jones has faced criticism for choosing a fight with Stipe Miocic over Tom Aspinall, with some calling it an easier matchup. Despite this, Jones expressed gratitude for Dana White’s praise and defended Miocic. He pointed out that, despite Miocic’s reputation suffering from a single loss to Francis Ngannou (who can knock out 98% of people), Miocic remains a strong opponent.
