Bantamweight champion of the UFC Sean O’Malley completed his title defense against Marlon Vera in the main event of the UFC 299. O’Malley won the strap against Aljamain Sterling when he knocked him out in the second round of their bout. O’Malley put up a clinic in his first title defense against Marlon Vera. O’Malley reminded everyone why he’s the greatest striker in the Bantamweight division.
Sean O’Malley is the one of the biggest guy in the company size wise. As it turns out he wants to stay active as the champion of the Bantamweight division.
Sean O’Malley gives a hint of his next title defense
Sean O’Malley seems to be riding high on confidence as he defended the title in spectacular fashion last month. O’Malley gave out a subtle hint on when he wants to step inside the octagon in the near future.
Sean O’Malley tweeted ‘Sugtember’. It’s quite clear what the champion wants to convey through this tweet. He will most probably take on Merab Dvalishvili as Merab is on an absolute tear in the division. He beat Henry Cejudo in quite a emphatic fashion. Cejudo is an Olympic gold medalist and a former two-division champion in the UFC.
Many believe that Sean O’Malley’s bout against Merab is going to be a bad one for him. Strikers usually don’t fare well against traditional grapplers. Merab attempted a ton of takedowns on Petr Yan ad broke the UFC record of most takedowns attempted. It’ll be interested to see of he can make Sean bend to his will. Sean O’Malley will want to knock Merab out early in the fight to avoid using his take down defense and spend his energy on grappling exchanges.
It’ll be interesting to see Merab and Sean square off in the famous Las Vegas sphere. Who will come out on top later this year to hold the Bantamweight strap? It remains to be seen.
