Sean O’Malley shared that he sustained an injury at UFC 306 and will be taking an extended break, though he remains active on social media. He’s been posting humorous content, including a video in which he placed his bantamweight belt in a pink suitcase, signaling his break from fighting. More recently, ‘Suga’ posted another video in which he takes the belt back, asserting that he’s still the champion and that Merab Dvalishvili did not beat him at UFC 306.
O’Malley suffered a significant career setback, losing his bantamweight title to Merab Dvalishvili via unanimous decision at the Las Vegas Sphere. However, ‘Suga’ believes the judges made an unfair call. After rewatching the fight for the first time, O’Malley argued that he should have won, claiming he took Rounds 1, 3, and 5. In a post on Instagram, the former champion stated:
“I’m back. Just rewatched the fight. I won round one, three and five. F**k you, Merab, you’re still a b**ch. I’m the champ and still undefeated. Defending my belt in June or July against Umar Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas.”
However, the judges had a different perspective. Two scored the fight, with O’Malley winning only two rounds, while the third gave him just the fifth. Many fans and MMA analysts believe Dvalishvili put on one of the finest performances of his career, while ‘Suga’ seemed off his usual form. With the belt now in his possession, the newly crowned Bantamweight Champion, ‘The Machine,’ will likely face Umar Nurmagomedov in his first title defense.
Merab Dvalishvili Drops Hint About Upcoming Showdown With Umar Nurmagomedov
Dvalishvili previously dismissed the idea of facing Umar, stating that ‘The Young Eagle’ doesn’t have the resume for a title shot, as he has only defeated one ranked fighter so far. During the UFC 306 post-fight press conference, Dvalishvili also mentioned that former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo would be a more deserving opponent. However, it seems Umar could be next in line, as Dvalishvili hinted at his next fight, writing:
