The last few weeks months in the UFC have been quite entertaining. Islam Makhachev beat Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302. Poirier gave Islam five difficult rounds but couldn’t emerge victorious in his third title fight in the cage. After the heartbreaking defeat, Poirier hinted at retirement, which sent the fans into a frenzy. However, in a recent interview, Poirier hinted at what’s next for him in the octagon.
Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje: The Trilogy
When making a list of the most violent fighters in the UFC promotion, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier will be at the top. The duo are heavily reliant on their striking pedigree inside the octagon. Gaethje and Poirier are both knockout artists and have finished a ton of fighters in the cage, including each other. Poirier challenged Gaethje for the BMF belt last year but got knocked out in the second round.
Earlier, Poirier finished Gaethje when they fought the first time around. In an interview with Daniel Cormier, Poirier said,
You know I don’t like to leave things unsettled. We are 1-1, with one KO a piece. So, the rubber match? I don’t know, we gotta see.
Dustin Poirier hinted at a trilogy fight with Justin Gaethje. The MMA fans would love to witness a third fight between the Louisiana native and the former BMF Champion. Both the fighters are coming off a loss, and scrapping with one another might be exactly what they need in the cage. The lightweight division has been dominated by the duo for years, but both of them have yet to acquire UFC gold in the octagon.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the UFC in the upcoming months. Will Poirier and Gaethje meet in the middle of the octagon? Only time will tell.
