Kamaru Usman has had one of the best reigns as the welterweight champion of the UFC. He beat out almost every top contender in the organization during his prime and even became the number one pound for pound fighter in the organization. Usman once again proved himself to be an absolute daredevil when he fought Khamzat Chimaev on short notice.
Although Khamzat won the fight via decision, Usman certainly didn’t make it easy for him during their bout. In a conversation with fellow fighters Chael Sonnen and Henry Cejudo Usman talked about his experience of facing Khamzat. Many might be surprised to hear what Kamaru had to say.
Kamaru Usman doesn’t think highly of Khamzat Chimaev
In a conversation with Chael Sonnen on getting asked about Khamzat Chimaev, Usman replied,
That wasn’t special. There was nothing different that I haven’t seen. Had I given it a little bit more, had I given myself a little bit more credit.
Usman made it clear that Khamzat was not in possession of some special skillset. He admitted that pre-fight hype of Khamzat got to him to a certain extent. Kamaru pressed on the fact if he would have trusted himself a bit more and given himself a bit more credit things might have been different.
Kamaru became Khamzat’s latest victim after Chimaev was able to take him down without much resistance. After his spectacular championship run where he defended his belts against some of the best contenders Kamaru finds himself in three fight losing streak. It’ll certainly be interesting to see who Usman choses as his next opponent in the UFC.

Kamaru’s loss certainly hasn’t brought down his stock as he went up to middleweight to fight a trailblazing opponent in Khamzat. The former champion would love to get his hands back on UFC gold but as it turns out the odds are stacked against him. There have not been many champions in the past who lost and came back to reclaim their gold. Usman might have to take inspiration from none other Jon Jones who beat Daniel Cormier to reclaim his Light heavyweight title from the Olympian.
