The UFC 302 ended with Islam Makhachev retaining his title after an impressive performance throughout the five rounds in the octagon. Makhachev is now on a winning streak of fourteen wins in the UFC. The Russian will likely take on Arman Tsarukyan for his next title defense, but a certain UFC Heavyweight has other suggestions.
Islam Makhachev to face Conor McGregor?
Islam Makhachev overtook the win streak of his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, in the cage with fourteen wins. Islam then opened the possibility of taking on Leon Edwards by going up a weight class to the Welterweight division of the UFC. However, Brendan Schaub, the former UFC Heavyweight, has other plans. On a podcast show, Schaub said,
Conor’s gonna call out Islam. He wants the title. He wants the big boy so he wants all the money.
Brendan Schaub clarified that Conor would set his eyes on Islam Makhachev’s Lightweight strap in the cage. Instead of reigniting his rivalry in the cage with Poirier, McGregor will call out the pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev in the octagon if he is to finish Chandler in UFC 303 later this month. This is an interesting take, as Conor would love to level the score with his Dagestani rivals.
The former two-division champion has been sitting on the sidelines for three years after breaking his leg in the cage against Dustin Poirier. Many will believe that Conor should not take on Islam currently, given the fact that he is quite a dangerous opponent. Islam Makhachev should not be taken lightly in the octagon as the Dagestani is ranked pound for pound number one for a good reason.
The MMA fans would love to see this matchup go ahead mainly because of the build-up of the fight, and Conor’s trash-talking self will be a source of massive entertainment.
