Every athlete wants to compete with the top dogs because that’s where the big spotlight is. In the MMA world, fighting under Dana White’s promotion is the ultimate goal since it’s the biggest stage out there. But plenty of stars have dipped out for bigger paydays elsewhere. Just like Cody Garbrandt, who’s gearing up for what could be his last UFC fight under his current contract. He’s keeping his options open and says the final decision will come down to one thing: the bag.
Recently, Garbrandt shared that his upcoming fight against Miles Johns, set for Nov. 9 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, is the last one on his current contract. Talking about it on Jaxxon Podcast. he said that he has a solid relationship with the UFC CEO and would love to stay in the octagon long-term. Adding to that, Garbrandt hopes they can work out a deal to keep him with the UFC. However, he’s also staying open to other opportunities, depending on where the money’s at.
In his words, “I’m still going through some things with the UFC. This is my last fight on the contract, so (I’ve) got to get together with them and see what we can come up with. I’d love to (re-sign). I love the UFC – I think especially where the sport is going. I love mixed martial arts. Obviously, UFC is the premier league to fight in. But, you know, money talks.”
At the end of the day, it’s all about the money for everyone. And once they’ve built up their name and fanbase through the UFC spotlight, many decide to chase bigger paychecks elsewhere. Fighters like Francis Ngannou, Marc Diakiese, and Cris Cyborg are perfect examples of stars who’ve left for better deals. So if Garbrandt gets a solid offer from another promotion, it wouldn’t be surprising if he takes the bag and moves on.
