After his last fight, Joaquin Buckley decided to call out none other than Conor McGregor. It was a bold move. But Daniel Cormier wasn’t impressed. He called it the “worst callout of all time, igniting the beef that continues to this day. Buckley took issue with Cormier, claiming he had insulted McGregor’s mother.
Cormier, being the stand-up guy he is, decided to confront ‘New Mansa’ face-to-face in a recent interview on his YouTube channel. ‘DC’ didn’t pull any punches in his response. He laid it out plain and simple.
“That’s the problem, though. You can’t be saying momma raised a h*e, though. You’re talking about this dude’s mom still, that’s disrespectful. That’s the job that she did, Joaquin. You didn’t call her [a bad name], I get that, but then that turns into you saying that our mommas raised h**s. Come on, man, we can’t do that. We don’t do that. Like, we just don’t do that.”
Cormier even shared a personal anecdote to drive his point home. He recalled how Jon Jones, his bitter rival, once apologized for a comment about DC’s father. And if those two can find common ground, there’s hope for everyone.
This whole situation brings up an interesting question in the MMA world. Where is the line with trash talk? It’s a fine line between hyping a fight and crossing into disrespect. As for Joaquin Buckley, he’s got bigger fish to fry. He’s gearing up for a showdown with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at UFC 307.
Joaquin Buckley Wants A Title Shot With Win Over Stephen Thompson
Buckley made the drop to 170 pounds back in 2023. Since then, he has been on an absolute tear, racking up four straight wins. Now, he is facing his toughest test yet: the karate kid himself, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. This showdown is set for UFC 307 in Salt Lake City.

At the recent media day presser, Joaquin Buckley did not mince words about his intentions. He saw Thompson as a stepping stone to the title. ‘New Mansa’ believed that a win over the former title contender would bring him right next to the title shot.
“He [Thompson] is definitely been at the highest level for the longest time. This is actually the lowest ranking he’s ever been, that we’ve seen, but at the end of the day I can’t tell his story. I can only make mine. But at the end of the day, I feel like this win for me is definitely going to put me in the position where I can fight the title one day.”
Stephen Thompson, at 41, is no spring chicken in MMA years. But he is still one of the trickiest puzzles to solve in the division. His karate style has confused many contenders over the years, and Joaquin Buckley knows this all too well.
