MMA demands mastery across disciplines like wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing, giving fighters an edge both on the ground and standing. Some fighters, like Dagestanis, excel in specific areas, such as wrestling, becoming dominant in that skill. However, Mikey Musumeci stirred debate when he dismissed legends like Khabib Nurmagomedov and others, instead naming Gilbert Burns as the best grappler in the organization.
In a recent conversation with Nina-Marie Daniele, Mikey Musumeci demonstrated Brazilian jiu-jitsu basics, teaching her moves like the Arm Triangle. True to her playful style, Nina put him on the spot, asking who he considers the UFC’s top grappler. Without hesitation, the New Jersey native named Gilbert Burns, his coach, as the standout. A BJJ icon, Burns boasts multiple world titles in both gi and no-gi, solidifying his reputation as one of the UFC’s most skilled ground fighters.
“Well, I got my black belt from Gilbert Burns. So he’s my coach, so I have to say him. But I really think he has amazing jiu-jitsu. Great submissions, great everything. So he’s my answer,” Musumeci said.
While many legends are celebrated for their grappling skills, Mikey Musumeci believes Gilbert Burns stands above the rest. Having been coached by Burns and earning his black belt under him, Musumeci confidently ranks him as the best, even over other UFC icons.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Suggests Old-School Fighters To Stop Fighting
In a recent chat with Henry Cejudo on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Khabib Nurmagomedov shared his thoughts on today’s lightweight stars. While praising their accomplishments, “The Eagle” suggested they consider retirement, emphasizing that it’s time to “stop fighting.” His advice wasn’t disrespectful but came from a place of wisdom, reflecting his own decision to leave the sport at the top.
“Justin Gaethje, Khabib [referring to himself], Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson. This is old school, brother. Stop fighting. We have to recognize the real things,” Khabib said.
