Robert Whittaker is set to fight the trailblazing Middleweight prospect in Khamzat Chimaev. Whittaker has been the champion of the Middleweight division before and is one of the most versatile fighters in the company. Robert last fought in UFC 299 and won against Paulo Costa in a rather interesting fashion. In a recent interview, Whittaker had something interesting to say about former champion Sean Strikcland’s reign as the company champion.
Whittaker has beaten many world-class fighters inside of the octagon. He is making his second run to the title.
Robert Whittaker on Sean Strickland’s reign as a champion
Robert Whittaker has been to the absolute top of the company. Whittaker knows how things work at the UFC. Sean Strickland became the champion in the Middleweight division when he beat Israel Adesanya over five rounds inside the octagon. Sean Strickland lost his title to Dricus Du Plessis in the cage after a five-round war with the South African. Robert Whittaker has an interesting insight into Strickland’s championship reign. He said,
I don’t think they (UFC) loved him as a champion. So I don’t think they are gunning for that rematch.
Robert Whittaker claimed that Sean is not getting a rematch because the UFC is not fond of him as a champion of the Middleweight division in the company. Sean Strickland was gunning for a rematch and called out Dricus and the UFC quite a few times on his social media handle. However, according to reports and rumors, the UFC might be looking elsewhere for Du Plessis’ first title defense in the company.
Robert Whittaker is taking on Khamzat, and Sean’s next opponent is undecided. It was speculated that he might scrap with Paulo Costa in the octagon. Sean Strickland will have to overcome the challenge of Paulp Costa in the octagon to win the Middleweight title again. Paulo is the phenomenal striker with immense power in his strikes and kicks. It will be interesting to see what happens in the middleweight division in the UFC in the near future.
