Umar Nurmagomedov showcased the best performance of his career, defeating Cory Sandhagen at UFC Abu Dhabi. The Dagestani fighter secured his most awaited bantamweight title shot with this win. However, despite securing the title shot, Merab Dvalishvili accuses Umar Nurmagomedov of using Khabib Nurmagomedov’s help to achieve quick success.
‘Young Eagle’ was ranked #10 before his fight against Sandhagen, who was ranked #2. After his latest win, Umar jumped from the 10th position to the 2nd position, marking a huge jump for any fighter.
However, Dvalishvili has spoken about the push Umar received from Khabib. He also mentioned that fighters like himself, Cory Sandhagen, and Aljamain Sterling had to earn the top spot in the division. At the same time, he claimed that O’Malley and Nurmagomedov had been pushed to the top.
“He has a push because we all know why. He’s Khabib’s cousin. He’s a good figher. I have all the respect [for] him. “It leaves me heartbroken when you see sometimes when you working hard. I wasn’t sure if I was getting a title fight until two weeks ago… He’s a good fighter, but we will see“, Dvalishvili said during an interview with heavywgtMMA.
“I’m not excited for this fight because I know he got here easy. He’s a good fighter but he got pushed. It’s like cheating a little bit to get here. I have 12 fights in the UFC, and I beat like seven or eight ranked fighters. Umar don’t fight any ranked fighters ye.”, he further added.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the ‘Young Eagle’ will face the winner of the Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili fight, which is set to take place at UFC 306.
