Alex Pereira is a sensation in the MMA world right now. His stardom extends beyond UFC fighters, with boxers like Jake Paul also expressing interest in fighting the Brazilian fighter. Pereira has dominated all the major PPV events of 2024, breaking records and remaining undefeated in the light heavyweight division. With such dominance, Max Holloway believes Alex Pereira is the frontrunner for the 2024 Fighter of the Year award.
Current BMF champion Max Holloway is set to face Ilia Topuria at UFC 308, aiming to reclaim the featherweight title from him. Ahead of the fight, the Hawaiian native recently spoke with Kevin Iole on his YouTube channel, discussing Pereira’s dominance in the UFC. Holloway acknowledged Pereira as the Fighter of the Year, given both fighters’ impressive performances in 2024. In a recent interview, he candidly shared his thoughts on the light heavyweight champion, saying:
“I mean I don’t know, man. I don’t know that I would do that [laughs]. The way Alex [Pereira] took fights. I mean the fastest guy to defend his title, right, with three title defenses. That’s a hard man to beat. I mean every time I’m in the talks for it, somebody’s having a crazy a** year. I think Alex Pereira has got that win in the bag already.”
Pereira last fought against Khalil Rountree at UFC 307, where he dominated the match despite struggling in the early rounds. He ultimately finished Rountree in a brutal fashion, solidifying his position as a frontrunner for Fighter of the Year against most competitors in the UFC. Meanwhile, the BMF champion is preparing for his upcoming fight, which is just weeks away.
Ilia Topuria Praises Max Holloway Despite Rivalry
Both fighters have been trading jabs on social media, constantly mocking each other. However, despite their rivalry, Ilia Topuria has expressed admiration for Max Holloway. The two recently met virtually during an interview with ESPN MMA, where Brett Okamoto asked Holloway how Topuria acquired the BMF belt. Holloway jokingly suggested that Topuria must have bought it and noted that Topuria is a fan of his. Surprisingly, Topuria confirmed this, stating:
“To be honest, I’ve been a [fan of Max Holloway] for many many years. I’ve followed the prime of your career since I took my first steps in MMA. You were a great example for the new generation, but now it’s my time.”
