The Welterweight division of the UFC is in an exciting spot. Leon Edwards is the World champion. He last defended his title in the company against Colby Covington, beating him comfortably throughout five rounds. The last fight Leon couldn’t win was against Belal Muhammad a few years back. Leon poked Belal in the eye, and the fight was declared a no-contest. Belal has been calling out Edwards for a title shot for quite some time now. In his latest interview, Leon’s head coach had some harsh words for Belal.
Belal has been on an impressive win streak, so much so it’s hard for anyone to reject Belal for a title opportunity.
Leon Edwards’ coach levies heavy allegations against Belal Muhammad
Leon and Belal’s first outing was declared a no-contest in the octagon. Belal Muhammad couldn’t recover from the brutal eye poke after five minutes of recovery time, and the referee had to end the bout. Since then, Muhammad has rag-dolled every one of his opponents inside of the octagon. Muhammad has called Leon out several times inside of the octagon now. Muhammad said,
If the eye poke never happened, I believe Leon would have finished him in the second round the way the fight was going. To me, analyzing the fight, looking back at it, Belal was looking for a way out. He was looking to steal a decision because that eye poke, right? And the noise he made, literally crying and screaming, you’ve heard it for yourself. The world heard it.
It’s funny that he didn’t have to go to the hospital. He didn’t have any eye damage. He didn’t have to go to the hospital to get his eye tested. What does that tell you? If the medics clear him after the fight and say you’re all right, what does that tell you? Tried to steal a decision, but payback is a b*tch. We’ll see
Dave Lovell believes if the fight had not halted, Edwards would have finished Belal in the second round. He also believes Leon is way better everywhere than Belal. Lovell claimed that Belal was looking for a way out of his bout after he could not get the better of Leon in the first round. He called bluff at Belal’s intense reaction after the eye poke, claiming that Muhammad was acting up when he started crying and howling.
Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards are two of the top Welterweight contenders in the company. Edwards will most probably fight Leon in his next bout. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when Leon and Belal come to blows in the UFC 304 a few months later. Will Belal be able to take Leon down and submit him, or will Edwards knock Belal out before the bell rings?
