Michael Chandler had not fought since he lost to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. He sat down almost two years ago to fight Conor McGregor. Unfortunately, McGregor pulled out due to injury, leaving Chandler and UFC CEO Dana White in a conundrum.
According to Ariel Helwani, McGregor’s injury is not severe. However, many question whether McGregor will ever return to the Octagon. With McGregor out, Chandler is in the spotlight. Will he wait to fight McGregor or look for other options?
Brett Okamoto gives career advice to Michael Chandler
Dana White knew who to call when McGregor pulled out. Alex Pereira vs Jiri Prochazka is now the main event of UFC 303. However, what’s next for Michael Chandler is still an enigma. Brett Okamoto provided his take on what should be next for Chandler on the Good Guy/Bad Guy show.
“I do think he should move on. I do think he should move on. It’s going to have to come to a situation where it’s like, what are you willing to move on to? The reason I think he should move on is…I don’t think Conor McGregor will fight again,” said Okamoto on Chandler.
“If you’re an exec at the UFC, you have Michael Chandler fight Justin Gaethje again…Islam Makhachev has said that he wants exciting fights. He doesn’t want rematches, he has never fought Gaethje, he has never fought Michael Chandler,” Okamoto added.
Okamoto stated that the UFC should book the rematch between Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje as the number one contender fight later this year or early next year. The pair fought at UFC 268, winning the 2021 Fight of the Year. According to Okamoto, Islam Makhachev will be interested in facing the victor.
