Tom Aspinall has been waiting for a long time for his match-up against Jon Jones. While that did not happen at UFC 309, Aspinall had his payout revealed accidentally. In a leaked message circulating on social media, Aspinall allegedly confessed to having been paid $200,000 for being a backup fighter.
As a matter of fact, waiting for the main event to arrive, Aspinall got tensed with each passing moment. Having a desire to quench his thirst with some alcoholic beverages, Aspinall asked Hunter Campbell for permission. Unfortunately, the UFC co-founder could not permit the interim heavyweight champion to get intoxicated.
After all, if by chance, either Jon Jones or Stipe Miocic would have pulled out, it would create a big mess.“For $200K, I’d very much appreciate it if he can wait until they [Jones and Miocic] walk… I’d kill myself if I said yes and something went wrong,” the leaked text read.
Now, it is not sure whether $200k was all that Aspinall got for being the backup main eventer. However, in a vlog posted on YouTube, Aspinall expressed his frustration at being the backup fighter. He also vowed never to sign up for such a deal as it involves significant uncertainty and increased tension. In fact, Aspinall is literally dying to fight Jon Jones.
Is Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall A Possibility?
Since winning the interim championship by defeating Sergei Pavlovich, the general consensus was that Aspinall would fight Bones next. However, much to everyone’s surprise, Aspinall was booked against Curtis Blaydes. Showing impressive talent and knocking out the big man under a minute of Round 1, Aspinall further called out Jon Jones.

Yet, he was only designated to be a backup fighter. However, in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, the UFC Head Honcho, Dana White, discussed the idea of the match ultimately becoming a reality. “If [Jones] wins on Saturday night and then turns around and fights Tom Aspinall, the Tom Aspinall-Jon Jones fight will be probably the biggest heavyweight fight we’ve ever done by a long shot,” said Dana White.
Surely, Jones has emerged as the champion. And with the UFC fans wanting to see the match get official, it remains to be seen whether the long-awaited match-up finally takes place.
