Sean Strickland and middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis have been trading shots in a social media feud, with many fans eagerly anticipating a potential rematch. However, Khamzat Chimaev has recently set his sights on Strickland’s title shot, aiming to seize the opportunity with an impressive performance at UFC 308. Chimaev faces Robert Whittaker this weekend, and if he secures an early-round finish, he could position himself for a title shot.
Chimaev has been pushing for a title shot for some time but has been stuck facing top contenders. Currently ranked 13th in the division, with Whittaker holding the No. 3 spot, there’s a possibility he could move into title contention if he secures a win over Whittaker this weekend. During UFC 308 media day, a reporter asked the Russian fighter if a first or second-round win against Whittaker could earn him a title shot. And ‘Borz’ replied:
“I hope so [getting a title shot], but they said that before as well, when I beat Gilbert Burns, how long time ago, 2-3 years ago now. After that, Usman. If he beats Usman, then fight for the title. So we will see, But I’m happy with the money. I am making more money than any champion as well. So yeah.”
While the title shot isn’t confirmed for Chimaev, winning at UFC 308 could elevate his rank in the division. Additionally, Strickland has a greater chance of securing a title shot since he currently holds the top spot in the division. However, it’s up to UFC’s Matchmaker, who will decide the ultimate fan favorite fight.
