Khabib Nurmagomedov isn’t just an undefeated champ, he was a beast in the octagon, bringing relentless intensity to every fight. While most fighters show up ready to overpower and do serious damage. And then there are fighters like Khalil Rountree, who step into the cage carrying their personal battles, showing that anything is possible. Consequently, every fighter has their own reason for fighting, and Khabib was no different. The Dagestani legend recently revealed that hurting opponents was never his aim. Instead, his focus was stacking the wins just to get his hands on that championship gold.
Recently, a video of Khabib surfaced online. The Dagestani legend recalls his fight against Michael Johnson in 2016. In the video, he reflects on how he ensured Johnson’s safety during their bout. Recognizing that Johnson wasn’t on his level, he decided to offer him advice throughout the fight.
Interestingly, Khabib claims he had Johnson’s arm in a position that could have easily broken it, but Khabib chose not to go that route. Instead, he encouraged Johnson to tap, which he ultimately did, leading to Khabib’s victory. Reflecting on the fight, the undefeated 29-0 champion reiterated that his aim was never just to beat his opponent but to win the championship.
He said, “I understand he’s not on my level and I give him advice…..When I take his arm, I really can break his arm and I don’t do this…My goal in this sport was not hurting people. My goal was like to become world champion without [hurting people].”
