Some historical rivalries didn’t take place in the combat realm, but still linger with the fighters. One of these rivalries is Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, a fight that was scheduled multiple times but never happened. Recently, the feud flared up again after Khabib’s comments upset Ferguson, leading him to respond. Now, the back-and-forth continues as Nurmagomedov took to X to mock Ferguson and suggest he retire to make room for younger fighters.
To give context to how the beef reignited, Nurmagomedov recently said in an interview that he doesn’t see himself losing to Tony Ferguson unless Ferguson landed a lucky punch. After which, ‘El Cucuy’ bragged about having the longest win streak in UFC lightweight history to show how dominant he was in his prime, dismissing Nurmagomedov’s claim.
To which the Dagestani legend responded by pointing out that he didn’t comment about Ferguson unless fans pressed him about it. He also suggested that Ferguson should focus on his life and family instead of the sport, leaving it to younger fighters.
In his words, “You know what’s interesting, I didn’t say anything about you, people just post whatever they want on the internet and write that it’s Khabib. Enjoy your life and your family, leave this sport for the young fighters.”
It will be interesting to see if the half-retired Ferguson responds to or ignores the comments. Even though the actual fight never happened, it will be exciting to see who wins the war of words.
Why Did Khabib Nurmagomedov Vs. Tony Ferguson Never Take Place?
The UFC has canceled Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson not once, not twice, not thrice, but five times. It all started at the TUF final in 2015, where Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson was the featured bout. However, Nurmagomedov had to pull out because of a rib injury.

The second time, in 2016, it wasn’t ‘The Eagle’ but Ferguson who had to pull out of the fight due to blood and fluid in his lungs. After that, at UFC 209, Nurmagomedov famously missed weight. Then, ‘El Cucuy’ had to pull out of the UFC 223 due to a knee injury. The last attempt, at UFC 248, was called off because of travel restrictions during the pandemic.
