The welterweight division has always been one of the strongest in the UFC, with every fighter looking like they could be championship material. Carlos Prates is one of the rising stars in this division, and he continued to prove his worth with another impressive performance at UFC Vegas 100. After the fight, Prates dropped some major news for Kamaru Usman regarding a potential matchup. Usman’s reaction was quick and to the point, responding with just three words.
Following his victory over Neil Magny, Prates shared some exciting rumors about the welterweight division’s next big matchup during the post-event show. While chatting with Usman, Karyn Bryant, and Rashad Evans, Prates mentioned that the UFC is reportedly planning a December clash between former welterweight champ Usman and rising star Shavkat Rakhmonov.
He stated, “First I would like to fight Jack Della Maddalena but I heard something like the UFC wants to do Kamaru Usman against him. But I also heard Kamaru Usman would fight Shavkat, but if he fights Shavkat, probably he won’t fight in February.”
Surprisingly, Usman responded, “News to me.” While nothing has been confirmed, there is no doubt the matchup between former UFC champion Usman and Rakhmonov, who has been absolutely dominant and undefeated, would be an exciting addition to the welterweight division.
Kamaru Usman Shares His Thoughts On Shavkat Rakhmonov Fight
For those who don’t know, after news broke of Belal Muhammad pulling out, speculation about a potential Usman vs. Rakhmonov fight started buzzing online. Earlier, Usman mentioned that the UFC would likely choose someone they believe is tough enough, brave enough to step in on short notice, and capable of possibly pulling off an upset.
He stated, “Definitely the UFC knows who to call when that situation happens. And if they do give me a call, I’m gonna answer the call, get a couple things straight, and if we’ve got to do it, we’ve got to do it. I don’t shy away from any of that.”
