We’ve seen athletes come out of retirement in many sports due to their undying competitive spirit. Just last year, one of the biggest legends, Amanda Nunes, retired after an incredible career. But her ex-rival, Julianna Pena, isn’t buying it. She’s convinced she’ll get her revenge and beat Nunes, making her return to the octagon.
In a recent MMA Hour Show, Pena made numerous headlines for accusing Kayla Harrison of ducking the Anti-Doping room. One of the biggest things she has claimed was the return of Amanda Nunes to the UFC. She claimed that she’ll get the bantamweight belt and will surely fight Nunes, who she thinks isn’t retired yet.
“I want to fight Raquel Pennington, I want my belt back. After that I would absolutely call out Amanda. And I believe she absolutely will come back. Because it’s just too big of a fight for her to go away. Everyone’s like, ‘Do you believe she’s retired?’ No, I don’t”, Pena said.
Why Does Julianna Pena Believe Amanda Nunes Will Come Back From Retirement?
Talking about their history, Nunes held dual UFC titles until a stunning submission loss to Pena at UFC 269, ending her seven-year reign. However, she swiftly reclaimed her bantamweight title in a rematch at UFC 277. They were set for a trilogy at UFC 289, but Pena’s injury sidelined her. Nunes faced Irene Aldana instead and retired that night, leaving Pena hopeful for their eventual trilogy fight.
As per Pena, she is all set to settle the business with Nunes once she becomes a champion herself. She’s convinced a Nunes vs. Pena rematch would be massive for the women’s division. Given these circumstances, Nunes has a strong reason to come back for another epic showdown. And now it will be interesting to see if it really happens or if Pena is cooking up some wild story.
