Jon Jones recently made a thunderous return to the octagon. He demolished Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 and defended his heavyweight title. Despite earlier hints about retirement, he has made it clear he is not done fighting. The heavyweight champion has been dropping breadcrumbs about a potential super fight with Alex Pereira, but Dana White seems to have other plans.
Chael Sonnen, never one to shy away from a spicy take, believes there’s a narrow path to making this dream fight happen. According to him, Jones is essentially boxed into two options: fight Tom Aspinall or sit out. But the “American Gangster” sees a glimmer of hope for the Pereira matchup.
“I mean, if the Pereira army really spoke up – I don’t know how badly Pereira wants to fight Ankalaev…In fact, if you could sign on to fight Ankalaev, or you could entice Jon Jones to come down and do that fight, I think that Pereira would be more in line for that, I’m guessing.”
Sonnen suggests that the key might lie with Alex Pereira’s fans and supporters. But there is a catch. Jon Jones would need to consider dropping back down to light heavyweight—a weight class he dominated for years before moving up to heavyweight. It’s no small feat for a fighter who’s been competing at a higher weight class.
Pereira, for his part, seems intrigued by the possibility. The potential matchup would be a dream scenario for fight fans – two champions from different weight classes squaring off in what could be an epic battle.
Jon Jones Doesn’t Think The Title Is Necessary For Him To Fight Alex Pereira
The heavyweight champion recently dropped a bombshell that got everyone talking. He revealed that he was willing to give up his hard-earned heavyweight title just to chase a fight with Alex Pereira. Most fighters would kill to hold onto a championship belt, but not Jones. He’s playing a different game entirely.

Jon Jones isn’t even concerned about traditional title fights anymore. He’s more interested in fights that make his legacy stronger. And according to him, Alex Pereira has all that he needs to do that.
“It’d be cool to fight over the heavyweight championship. But I would also willingly give up the heavyweight championship….Fighting Pereira for the BMF belt, that would be cool,” said Jones via Aaron Bronsteter.
Jon Jones clarifies that the heavyweight title would not necessarily have to be at stake if he were to fight Alex Pereira and he has another belt in mind.

What makes this interesting is Jon Jones‘ complete disregard for conventional fighting politics. He’s a champion who doesn’t seem to care about being a champion in the traditional sense.
