The UFC introduced its new “Golden Gloves” in June, debuting them at UFC 302. These gloves, designed to distinguish title fight competitors, are only used in championship bouts. However, fans won’t see the Golden Gloves at the upcoming UFC 309, where a title fight headlines the main event. Instead, standard gloves will be used. Jon Jones has reacted to this last-minute glove change for UFC 309.
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. The organization recently announced that fighters competing at Madison Square Garden in New York will wear the classic gloves instead of the new model introduced at UFC 302. On media day, Jones talked about the sudden change.
“They are very uncomfortable. They are a lot smaller than the old gloves. The curve just feels funny. Hunter called me and said that he was going to put everyone on the card back in the original gloves, and I was just so grateful,” he said.
It’s not just ‘Bones’ that criticizes the new gloves. UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev points out that the gloves are stiffer and could lead to more cuts during fights. While Jones isn’t thrilled with the gloves, he is pleased with his new shorts.
