The UFC is currently in an interesting place. There are a ton of superstars in the company, with a few aiming for double-champion status. Islam Makhachev, the Lightweight king, has dominated the pound-for-pound ranking lately. Much speculation was whether Islam deserved the spot or Jon Jones should have taken his place.
A certain UFC veteran gave his take on the matter and clarified that he disagrees with Jon Jones and Dana White.
Former UFC Title Challenger on Pound-for-Pound Debate
Dana White made it clear that he believed Jon Jones should be the pound-for-pound number-one fighter in the company. This was after Islam Makhachev finished Dustin Poirier in the fifth round of the fight via a tight D’Arce choke. The former title challenger, Rashad Evans, who previously lost to Jon Jones in a title fight in 2012, gave his take on the matter. Evans said,
Since 2020 Jon has foguht one time. Makhachev has fought eight times. In that time he has shown a great range of skill, grea range of heart.
Rashad Evans clarified that he believes Islam Makhachev is the rightful pound-for-pound king in the UFC ahead of Jon Jones. He revealed that Islam has been the more active fighter in the octagon and is much more skillful than anyone in the cage. Islam Makhachev has finished all of his last seven opponents in the past four years in the octagon, whereas Jon fought once last year after a five-year hiatus.
Jon Jones is all set to take on Stipe Miocic, whereas Islam will fight Arman Tsarukyan in the octagon after a few months. If both of them are to win in the cage, it will be interesting to see who emerges victorious in the pound-for-pound rankings.
