The Pound-for-Pound rankings debates have been heating up in the combat sports world lately. Although Jon Jones ranks third in the P4P rankings, UFC President Dana White backed him as the deserving No. 1 fighter. However, the famous American commentator Jon Anik expressed his disagreement with his fellow compatriot’s opinion.
Recently, Anik spoke to Mike Owens of InsideFighting on YouTube. When he was asked who should be the no. 1 fighter in the P4P rankings, the UFC commentator dismissed the conversation around Jon Jones. Although Anik praised ‘Bones’ for being a great MMA fighter, he backed Islam Makhachev for being the World’s No. 1 in the pound-for-pound rankings. He said,
“Well, if activity is part of it then Jon Jones can’t lead the conversation. Jon Jones is the greatest mixed martial arts athlete that I’ve ever seen and his performance against Ciryl Gane, however, long ago did nothing to diminish his value. It only served to elevate his stock on the back end of whatever training camp he had, right?”
“So, I understand why people want to lead the conversation with Jon Jones. But for me, it’s Islam Makhachev every day of the week.”
When Jon Jones’ Thanks Message To Dana White Attracted Into Trolls
June 1, 2024 – the date when the UFC President dismissed Islam Makhachev as no. 1 in the P4P rankings. Jones took his X handle the next day to thank his boss for backing him up. He wrote that White had been associated with the MMA promotion since UFC 1 and called the American businessman a “pretty hard person to argue with.”
However, it’s noteworthy that Jones made a mistake in claiming White’s association with the company since UFC 1. Regarding facts, the 46-year-old American joined the company in 2001, and his involvement has been since UFC 30. Even fans and some UFC associates corrected Bones’ mistake.
