In any sport, having the right eye at the right time is crucial for any athlete. Given that it can turn their potential into a star. Just as Ilia Topuria benefits from Jorge Climent and Leon Edwards relies on Dave Lovell, a coach’s role is as crucial as an athlete’s training to make them unstoppable with the strategies. Often, this leads to a solid partnership between them. Talking about strong bonds, famous coach John Kavanagh from Dublin, Ireland, recently shared how he expanded his collaboration with Conor McGregor beyond the MMA octagon. Given they are business partners now, he shared how he made this partnership possible—with one condition.
In an exclusive talk with Bloody Elbow, McGregor’s coach, Kavanagh, highlighted how the timing couldn’t have been better, with McGregor recently upping his investment in Alta. McGregor and Kavanagh are now working together as business partners for those who don’t know. The Irishman invested in Alta Global Group, of which Kavanagh is in charge.
During his interview, Coach admitted he was slow to ask ‘The Notorious’ for this because everyone was trying to pitch ideas to him. Consequently, he wanted to keep their relationship clean and focused on their long-time coach-athlete bond. After almost 20 years of working together, he didn’t want to mix business with their long-standing relationship. So, he presented the idea to McGregor with one condition: don’t give him special treatment just because he’s been instrumental as a coach.
In his words, “What I did was, because of my contact with Conor, I was able to set up a meeting with our team and his team. But I did say to his team, listen, give us the same scrutiny. We’ll go through the same due diligence of any company that Conor’s shown an interest in. And only go with it if it makes complete business sense, no favors for old coach here.”
Coach Kavanagh Shares How Team Conor McGregor Dived Deep Before Investment Decision
Adding more to that, Kavanagh explained that he didn’t push McGregor into a business deal based on emotions. He wanted it to make sense for the long term. The recent announcement was a year in the making and involved a lot of work with McGregor’s team to make sure everything fit perfectly.
Kavanagh said he was proud of the outcome and excited about their company’s big news. He noted that many companies try to partner with McGregor, but only a few succeed. McGregor’s team saw value in their product, which gave them high hopes for future success.
