Joe Rogan, a well-known figure in entertainment and sports, has a popular YouTube podcast called “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Rogan welcomed former UFC fighter David Lee “Tank” Abbott as a guest in one of his recent episodes.
As a veteran of the octagon, Tank’s appearance on Rogan’s podcast likely allowed the two to discuss various topics related to current events and their experiences in mixed martial arts, so let’s check out the details.

Tank Abbott, a retired American mixed martial artist and professional wrestler, is renowned as an early icon of mixed martial arts and the UFC. He began his MMA career by applying to compete in UFC 6 in Casper, Wyoming. In a recent conversation with Joe Rogan, Abbott discussed the minimal regulations that characterized the early days of the UFC.
During his MMA days, Abbott was known for his massive size, which has diminished as he has aged to 59. Joe Rogan remarked on this, asking, “When you look back at yourself, then does that even seem like you?” Abbott replied with, “Yeah, why not?” and Rogan clarified, “I mean of course it is you, but I mean the young hulking, you smashing guys.”
In the early days of the UFC, there were far fewer rules and safety measures compared to the modern organization. Abbott discussed how there used to be no rounds, with fights lasting a single, continuous 17-minute round.
However, the UFC has since significantly improved its rules and regulations. It now has multiple rounds and has implemented measures to prioritize fighter safety and well-being. The modern UFC demonstrates a much greater focus on protecting the athletes than the more unstructured early days of the promotion.
