Javier Mendez, the head of the American Kickboxing Academy, recently shared a heartfelt tribute that captured the essence of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s remarkable coaching career. Their connection wasn’t just professional. Mendez remembered Abdulmanap as more than just a coach; he was a humanitarian with an extraordinary ability to nurture talent.
When Mendez first met Abdulmanap in 2014, he recognized something special in the Russian coach’s approach. Unlike many protective mentors, Abdulmanap was uniquely supportive of his son, Khabib’s training with other coaches. He believed in collaborative growth and trusted the process, a philosophy Mendez fondly referred to as “Father’s Plan.”
“I had the privilege of knowing Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, in 2014, 2 years after Khabib started training with Me and I can confidently say he was The best Coach I ever met a remarkable human being. A true humanitarian with a beautiful heart, he embodied discipline and humility as a coach.”
Abdulmanap’s legacy extends well beyond Khabib Nurmagomedov. He was instrumental in developing multiple champion fighters, including Usman and Umar Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev, and others who would go on to dominate their weight classes. His coaching wasn’t just about physical techniques but also about instilling discipline, humility, and an unwavering work ethic.
Tragically, Abdulmanap passed away due to COVID-19, leaving a void in the martial arts world. Yet, his impact continues through the champions he raised and the coaches he inspired. Mendez’s tribute wasn’t just a remembrance but a celebration of a man who transformed countless lives through martial arts.
