Dustin Poirier last fought in UFC 299 and won via a spectacular knockout in the second round. He was the underdog going into the fight. He took on the up and coming Frenchmen Benoit Saint-Denis. Benoit was a known well-rounded fighter with elite grappling and decent striking. Poirier did struggle in the first round but was able to get a spectacular finish in the second one.
Poirier now once more is an interesting spot where everyone’s wondering who is going to be his next opponent.
Dustin Poirier slams Islam Makhachev over his comments
UFC Lightweight champion of the world Islam Makhachev in an interview that he would love to fight Poirier at UFC 302 in the upcoming months. The champion gave a rather weird reason for his decision. He claimed its not because that Poirier deserves it , is because that Dustin Porier is the only top contender available during that time. Poirier responded to that statement in an interview given,
That’s on him. I have done more for the sport of mixed martial art than he has. I have been around a long time. I was doing this before it was cool and I am still here doing it at the highest level. I can beat anybody in the world and I hope he’s next.
Poirier made it clear that he has been associated with the UFC since way before he has. He made sure that his message through to Islam as he claimed he can beat any man on the planet and he wants Islam to be his next victim. Poirier has achieved almost everything apart from the UFC lightweight title. He claimed he deserves it more than anyone and only wants the title fight next.
Dustin is an elite boxer with a black belt in grappling. He has had trouble dealing with great grapplers before. He even lost both of his title fights by submission. Whereas Makhachev comes from the land of grapplers and is considered the best wrestler in the UFC. On paper Islam will be the absolute favorite to retain his belt but anything can happen in MMA. Everyone’s got a puncher’s chance.
