Dustin Poirier has opened up about his future following his upcoming fight against Islam Makhachev. Poirier will go up against Makhachev and challenge for the lightweight title in June at UFC 302.
This would be Poirier’s third shot at the title after losing the chance against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. It is worth noting that Poirier is coming off a victory against Benoit St-Denis earlier this year.
As one would assume, Dustin Poirier is confidently going into the fight. Ahead of the fight, Poirier has suggested that this could prove to be his last fight. He said:
“It could be [my last fight]. I haven’t made an official decision yet, but it could be. I’ve said this over and over again, I still have a lot of tread on the tires. I can beat these young guys, I just did it… it’s just like, how much do I want to give to this sport, because you don’t ride for free…”
That said, it remains to be seen as to whether Poirier decides to retire or continue fighting following UFC 302

Can Dustin Poirier beat Islam Makhachev?
On paper, Dustin Poirier’s fight is extremely tough. Poirier has seemed to struggle against wrestlers like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira, and many believe that Islam Makhachev will impose the same threat.
Islam Makhachev is a great wrestler and certainly holds the edge over Poirier. However, ‘The Diamond’ is an extremely good striker, and if he can catch Makhachev, he can certainly stop the fight.
That said, Islam Makhachev is the favorite on paper. However, the fight could go either way. It will be interesting to see how the fight plays out when the two finally square off inside the octagon.
