Fighters in MMA are known for their physical and mental prowess. But what about the spiritual side? Israel Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champ, just dropped a bombshell. He is backing claims that his rival, Alex Pereira, might have some supernatural help. He agreed with another light heavyweight, Jiri Prochazka’s earlier accusation that Pereira uses some ‘magic’ in fights.
Adesanya recounted his losses to Pereira with a mix of frustration and awe. He described how he would be winning, only for Pereira to make a miraculous comeback. It’s as if Pereira had a secret “reverse uno” card up his sleeve.
“You know what Jiri said about the whole juju thing, that’s real, that’s real… It’s his spirit, it’s whatever his ancestors or his people that are praying for him because I have prayer worries as well my Mom and Dad be fastening and they have people in the spirit (world) praying for me, but like, the way he carries himself, something about him just, he knows how to recover well,” said Adesanya via The JRE podcast.
The Kiwi fighter talked about Pereira’s ability to recover well. He attributed it to the ‘magic’ of his ancestors and their prayers for him. Israel Adesanya had stunned Pereira badly in the first fight, with the bell saving him. But at the start of the next round, he was fully recovered and went on to defeat ‘The Last Stylebender.’
This spiritual angle adds a whole new dimension to their rivalry. It’s no longer just about who has the better jab or takedown defense. Now they are talking about who has the better connection to the spirit world!

At the end of the day, though, it’s still about skill, strategy, and good old-fashioned hard work. No amount of magic can replace hours in the gym and years of dedication. But the MMA world is unpredictable. Maybe fans will see Shamans in fight corners and referees checking for magic wands at weigh-ins!
