Islam Makhachev is the undisputed lightweight champion of the world and, as such, is a target for all the lightweights in the division. UFC 304 winner Paddy Pimblett has been in Makahachev’s peripherals for some time now, and he is willing to duke it out with him, but with a few conditions.
Makhachev has expressed openness to granting rising star Paddy Pimblett a title shot. However, there’s a significant caveat to this tantalizing prospect. The champ made it clear that Pimblett needs to prove himself first against top mettle in the UFC.
“When he deserve, why not? If he won couple next matches, when he’s gonna be in top 10, why not? … Now it’s all guys who are so dangerous,” said Makhachev via Q and A ahead of UFC Abu Dhabi.
The lightweight division is no cakewalk, and it seems the Liverpool native has some work to do. The champion emphasized the need for a few more quality wins against the top-ranked lightweights from Pimblett. This sets a clear challenge for the charismatic Scouser.
Pimblett’s popularity has skyrocketed since joining the UFC. His brash personality and exciting fighting style have won him many fans. However, Makhachev isn’t swayed by hype alone. He is looking for substance in the octagon. Fight fans are excited about this possibility in a year or so if Pimblett continues his streak.

Pimblett dropped a surprising stat in a post-fight press conference. He claimed to have finished Green a second faster than lightweight champion Islam Makhachev did back in February of 2022.
“No one has subbed him since January 2009. I saw a funny little stat there as well. My coaches said I finished him a second faster than Makhachev,” said Pimblett.
This playful jab at Makhachev showcases Pimblett’s confidence and humor. Pimblett’s victory puts him in elite company, right at the cusp at #15 in the UFC rankings. It also sets the stage for his next challenge, probably someone in the top 10. The Scouser has his sights set on bigger fish in the lightweight pond, Renato Moicano. Fight fans would love to see how the fight works out between these two bold fighters.
