Leon Edwards, the current UFC welterweight champion, has set his sights on matches with Islam Makhachev and Conor McGregor.
In the main event of the UFC 304 program in Manchester on July 27, Edwards will make his third defense of the title against Belal Muhammad. The bout is a rematch of their March 2021 encounter, which was stopped in the second round due to Muhammad’s inability to continue after being poked in the eye.
At UFC 302 on Saturday in Newark, Makhachev triumphed over Dustin Poirier in his most recent lightweight title defense. Following a demanding four rounds of back-and-forth action between Makhachev and Poirier, Makhachev brought the Octagon to a climax with a D’Arce choke submission in the fifth round.
Leon Edwards May Not Allow Islam Makhachev To Contest For 170 Pounds
The Russian said he is considering going up to welterweight for his next fight and wants to compete for a second title. In response to Makhachev’s intended switch to 170 pounds, Edwards, who will defend the welterweight title at UFC 304, has responded.
Leon Edwards, the current welterweight champion, has successfully defended his 170-pound belt twice, most recently against Colby Covington at UFC 296 in December last year.
Although Edwards expressed excitement about taking on Makhachev as the lightweight champion, he stated they both had “work to do” before engaging in a championship bout.

On June 29, in the main event of UFC 303 in Las Vegas, McGregor will finally step back inside the Octagon against Michael Chandler. If McGregor prevails, Edwards believes this will lead to a possible primary event fight between the former lightweight champion and himself at Madison Square Garden.
