Although Khabib Nurmagomedov respects Dustin Poirier, he believes Islam Makhachev will defeat him at UFC 302 by employing techniques from their 2019 match. Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, now retired, has shown respect for Dustin Poirier, his opponent from the past.
After defeating “The Diamond” alone, the Russian fighter-turned-coach thinks he has enough knowledge of Poirier’s habits to help his protégé, Islam Makhachev, win the UFC 302 main event.
Khabib Nurmagomedov, according to Islam Makhachev, is still deeply ingrained in the fighting game. After retiring as the unbeaten lightweight champion of the UFC, Nurmagomedov handed the mantle to Makhachev, who fulfilled the potential by winning the 155-pound division.
How Is Khabib Nurmagomedov Helping Islam Makhachev?
In the UFC 302 main event, Makhachev challenges Poirier for the lightweight title. This is Makhachev’s third title defense, allowing him to tie the lightweight record currently held by four champions. Makhachev’s friend and coach, Nurmagomedo, is a former lightweight champion and feels he has a clear advantage because of his personal history with “The Diamond.” Knowing Poirier’s weaknesses, Khabib intends to keep Islam at an advantage.
Nurmagomedov is Makhachev’s head coach. The 2010 MMA convert from sambo wrestling has only lost once in his UFC career, which was in his second bout with the organization. After just one defeat in 2015, Makhachev started an incredible winning run that will go down in UFC history. Having won his last three fights against former champions, Makhachev has an unquestionable pedigree with 13 straight victories.
During Islam’s training camp, Nurmagomedov gave a press conference before the fight. Respectful of his former opponent notwithstanding, Nurmagomedov plans to use the lessons learned from their battle to shape Islam.
