The upcoming UFC 302 might be the biggest MMA event of this calendar year. We are set to witness the pound-for-pound king in the cage against the UFC veteran Dustin Poirier. This is not the first time the UFC veteran has been in a title fight in the Lightweight division. Poirier has been at the top of the company’s lightweight rankings for many years. The Louisiana native clarified that the UFC 302 title fight might be his last shot at glory.
Dustin previously took on many champions in the Lightweight division and is again in a title fight against the formidable Islam Makhachev.
How many times has Dustin Poirier lost in the cage?
Dustin Poirier last fought against Benoit St-Denis and knocked him clean out in the second round of their bout in UFC 299. Poirier has been in two title fights in the past. He took on Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira and was submitted by both. Although Dustin is an elite boxer, he has been submitted twice in his two attempts at glory. Poirier is a black belt in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but he rarely uses his grappling pedigree in the ring.
Dustin Poirier has lost both of his title fights via a rear naked choke, a trademark submission technique in grappling. While Poireir loves jumping the guillotine, he still has work to do when it comes to escaping the rear naked chokehold.
Lightweight king Islam Makhachev has claimed that he will look to take Dustin’s back and submit him before the fight ends. Meanwhile, Poirier has gone on to claim that he’s going to finish Islam via a viscous knockout in the cage.
Poirier made it clear he would love to ride off in the sunset after capturing the UFC gold. The bout between Poirier and Islam is going to be an interesting one. Islam would love to engage in grappling exchanges with the Louisiana native, while Dustin would ideally keep the fight standing. Poireir might have a slight edge in the striking department, while Islam is clearly the better grappler of the two.
