The UFC 302 concluded recently, and Islam Makhachev retained his Lightweight strap against legend Dustin Poirier. It was a five-round war, and Makhachev finished Poirier in the fifth round. After his victory, many on social media were spotted comparing Islam with his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov and painting Islam as the inferior fighter.
A certain UFC veteran was spotted talking about the same and revealed a major flaw in such comparisons.
UFC Veteran blasts a common stereotype about Islam Makhachev
Islam Makhachev finished Dustin Poirier in the fifth round. Khabib submitted Dustin in the third round of their fight in the octagon. Many folks on social media pointed out that Khabib might just be the fighter of the two, but the legendary referee John Mcarthy gave his take on the same on his podcast Weighing In. John said,
I think people will always look and say ‘ Yeah he’s good. He’s not Khabib’ ….. You and I both know you can’t look at that way.
John McCarthy clarified that people will always compare Islam Makhachev to his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov, irrespective of his achievements in the octagon. He also revealed that comparing both based on how they won against Dustin Poirier is not smart, as styles make fights. McCarthy emphasized the fact despite Islam being the champion and pound-for-pound number one fighter in the UFC. He will still be considered inferior to the Eagle because they come from the same camp,
John shared a rather exciting analogy about Islam. Makhachev has beaten every opponent convincingly in the cage. He lost only once almost a decade ago. Makhachev has now finished all of his last seven opponents in the cage, including champion Alexander Volkanovski and grappling expert Charles Oliveira. It will be interesting to see what happens in the near future with Islam Makhachev. Will he be able to convince all the naysayers that he is the greatest Lightweight of all time?
