UFC 302 will take place in June in New Jersey, United States. Islam Makhachev will defend his belt against Lightweight veteran Dustin Poirier inside the cage. Poirier has beaten almost every major contender in the Lightweight division apart from the champion. Although he is a heavy underdog in the fight against Islam, he reveals what he will do if he can pull off a spectacular guillotine against Makhachev in the title fight.
Dustin Poirier last fought Benoit St-Denis and won in the second round via a vicious right hook, defying the odds.
Dustin Poirier on what happens if he wins the title by submitting Islam Makhachev
Dustin Poirier is one of the most versatile fighters in the UFC. He is an elite striker and holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has tried to submit many of his opponents via the guillotine submission but has yet to find any success. He was quizzed in an interview about what he would do if he won the Lightweight title via a tight guillotine choke inside the octagon. Poirier said,
I’ll get a bronze statue in my front yard of me in the guillotine position.
Dustin Poirier made it clear that he’s going to celebrate the landmark victory by installing a bronze statue of me in a guillotine position, submitting Islam Makhachev. Poirier had fought for the title twice before but got submitted via deadly rear naked chokes by his opponents. Poirier has been at the absolute top of Lightweight rankings since the beginning of this decade. This is his third title fight and possibly the last.
Poirier is the heavy underdog in his bout against Islam given he has struggled heavily against opponents with the grappling pedigree. If Poirier actually submits Islam via guillotine it will break the internet and cause a massive frenzy in the MMA world. Poirier’s last submission victory in the Octagon was against Michael Chandler a couple of years back. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the main event of UFC 302.
