Recently, it seems many UFC fighters are being overlooked and not getting the fights they deserve against legendary stars. For example, Michael Chandler waited two years for a matchup with Conor McGregor, but in the end, he had to move on and is now set to fight Oliveria. Similarly, Tom Aspinall’s frustration grows as Jon Jones shows no interest in facing him. And while Aspinall is the backup fighter for the Jones vs. Miocic bout at UFC 309, former rival Daniel Cormier doubts that Aspinall will get a chance even if there is an injury.
In a recent YouTube video, DC shared his doubts about Tom Aspinall being the actual backup fighter for Jones vs. Miocic. He suggests that even if one of the main fighters gets hurt, they won’t agree to a short-notice fight against Aspinall. Previously, Cormier has noted that fighting a British fighter poses risks for Jon Jones, leading him to avoid such matchups.
He stated, “Which one of them will actually stand and fight… There is no guarantee that because he is the backup fighter, somebody’s gonna fight him. I would almost guess that if someone gets hurt, Tom Aspinall stays on the card. And he fights neither one of those guys.”
It’s also important to remember that for both fighters, this could be the last bout of their careers. So they want to close that chapter against someone with a legacy. Despite all the hype, Aspinall is still relatively new and doesn’t yet have that established legacy. Cormier noted that Miocic didn’t fight Sergei Pavlovich, who served as the backup at UFC 296. He feels that, once again, the fighters might not step in against anyone other than each other.
Jon Jones Says Stipe Miocic Will Be His Last Fight
Jones has earned his status as Dana White’s favorite fighter for a reason. With a career defined by dominance and only one controversial loss due to disqualification, his record speaks for itself. Now, after more than 15 years, he appears ready to say goodbye to the arena that has provided him with everything—from drama and riches to fame and worldwide admiration.
In a recent interview at UFC 306, the 37-year-old stunned the UFC world with the news of him possibly leaving the sports. “It’s going to be the last time. More than likely,” said Jones. There’s no doubt that Jon “Bones” Jones has a Hall of Fame career. And it will be tough to find another fighter like him, with such a perfect blend of grappling and striking skills.
