The Welterweight division of the UFC went into a frenzy when Kamaru Usman got knocked out by Leon Edwards a couple years back in the final round. Usman was dominating the fight and was supposed to win via unanimous decision after the bell. Leon Edwards had other plans as he knocked Usman out of his senses with a precise head kick and went on to lift the welterweight strap. Usman recently opened up on who should challenge next for the Welterweight strap.
Kamaru Usman opens on the possible title contender
It’s been downhill for Kamaru Usman since he lost the welterweight belt. He is yet to win a bout against his opponent since. He last took on Khamzat on short notice and lost the fight. Although it was one hell of a scrap Kamaru Usman wasn’t able to get the job done. Usman gave his take on who should challenge for welterweight strap next. Kamaru said,
Honestly I think the only thing that makes sense right now is Belal Muhammad because Belal has been there for a while he’s been in that top 10 that top five and who else makes sense because I think it’s going to take time to be able to build someone to challenge the the
the champion to I mean it’s a thing right it’s a thing when you’re fighting for the title you you want to be on this on this run to where you’ve you’ve shown everyone that you belong there. You deserve the challenge for the title and I think it’s kind of Cloudy right now. In that division you’ve got all the new bloods in there the JDM as you mentioned Shavkat Rakhmanov you’ve got uh Ian Gary making his way up.
Kamaru Usman made it clear that only one man that is Belal Muhammad deserves to have a go at the UFC gold in the welterweight division. Belal has racked up an impressive winning and unbeaten streak in the division. No arguments can be made against him getting a go at the title. Belal is often criticized by the fans for having a rather boring fight style given his grappling heavy style.
Belal Muhammad has even fought Leon Edwards in the past but the fight ended in a no contest after Leon poked Belal in the eye and Muhammad was unable to continue afterwards. The UFC is yet to announce the next challenger. Shavkat Rakhmanov and Ian Garry are also plausible contenders in the welterweight division. If Belal actually gets a title shot it’ll be interesting to see how does he fare against the precies striker in Leon given he actually struggled against him in the first round.
It’ll be interesting to keep an eye out for all the possible matchups that the UFC announces in the future.
