Islam Makahachev is on a rampage in the UFC lightweight division as he is on a twelve fight winning streak. He last fought Alexander Volkanovski and knocked him out in a rather spectacular fashion. Every major UFC Lightweight star barring the champion is scheduled to fight next month or was supposed to fight in UFC 299. Islam in an interview acknowledged there is only one potential lightweight star which he can fight in the month of June or July. Makhachev claimed he would love to take on the top contender Dustin Poirier.
Former two-division champion Daniel Cormier made it clear why it’s best for the Dagestani to take on the Louisiana great.
Daniel Cormier elaborated why does Islam Makhachev should take on Dustin Poirier
Daniel Cormier has been at the absolute top of two divisions in the past. Namely the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Since retiring Cormier has taken on the role of a commentator and an MMA analyst. In a video uploaded by Full Mount MMA Cormier was spotted giving his take on a potential Islam vs Dustin bout. Daniel said,
Islam is finally understanding something I tried to tell a while ago. In order for Islam to get to where he truly needs to be as champ he got to have those familiar names on his resume. Conoe McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo to be the champion who was an amazing tool to spring board him to super stardom. He was already a star because he had beaten the greatest featherweight of all time in the manner in which he did it.
Cormier made it clear if Islam wants to be a star in the lightweight division he needs to take on guys like Poirier who has been at the top of lightweight rankings since forever now. Islam Makhachev will need to put aside guys like Dustin in order to be considered a lightweight great in the UFC. Poirier has had thirty fights in the company and taking on and beating Poirier is going to look good on his resume.
Poirier recently knocked Benoit St-Denis as he defied the odds when he beat out the Frenchmen. Benoit was considered one of the top contenders to challenge Islam for the belt. Poirier reminded everyone why he was in the UFC for over a decade now. It’ll be interesting to witness the return of Islam Makhachev in the near future and to see how he matches up with the versatile striking of Dustin Poirier.
