The Light Heavyweight division has been in a frenzy since Alex Pereira became its champion. Pereira has knocked out and finished two of the division’s best Light Heavyweights. Anthony Smith is another one of the top contenders in the Light Heavyweight division. Smith has been one of the top fighters in the division and has even fought for the title against Jon Jones. Anthony Smith is hands down one of the most versatile fighters in the company and recently gave out the reason as to why he does not care about the UFC gold anymore.
Besides being a fighter in the company, Smith acts as a fight analyst.
Anthony Smith makes a bizarre statement
Anthony Smith fought Jon Jones in 2019 for the UFC gold in a five-round fight. Jones finished him via a rear naked choke in the fourth round. Since then, the man has been chasing the title once more. Anthony Smith is set to take on Vitor Petrino on the main card of UFC 301. With a win over Petrino, he will get back in title contention in the division. Smith said,
It’s just blinded me. I’m so obsessed with it. I’m almost carrying an anchor with me. It changes the way I fight. It changes the way I think leading up to a fight. So I’m just done worrying about it.
Anthony Smith made it clear that he used to think about acquiring the title a lot, and it was a ton of pressure to deal with, just like an anchor holding back a ship. He revealed that it changed the way he thinks and works his mind, leading up to a fight. Anthony Smith wants to take no pressure leading up to his bouts inside the octagon. Many will agree that it is a somewhat correct strategy.
He last fought in the octagon against Khalil Rountree and was knocked out in the third round. Smith is still ranked number ten in the company. A win and a couple more victories in the octagon will make him one of the absolute favorites to fight for the title. It will be interesting to see how Smith fares against a much younger Vitor Petrino in the octagon.
