Diego Lopes is currently experiencing the peak of his career. He has recently headlined some of UFC’s most iconic events, including UFC 300, UFC 303, and the historic UFC 306. Furthermore, he has become a fan favorite by performing on such major stages. Currently riding a five-fight win streak, the Brazilian fighter is raising the stakes, expressing his desire to face Alexander Volkanovski and revealing his ambition to fight for the gold.
The 29-year-old first gained attention when he stepped in on short notice to fight Dan Ige at UFC 303, securing a win via decision. His recent victory at UFC 306 was even more impressive, as Lopes dominated all three rounds against Brian Ortega, winning by decision once again.
Now, following his UFC 306 triumph, Lopes is seeking his next opponent, with many speculating that a matchup against No. 4-ranked Movsar Evloev is in the works. However, in a conversation with MMA Fighting, Lopes clarified that he would only take the fight with Evloev if a win guaranteed him a title shot or if he’s eyeing a fight with the former champion, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski.
“The only possibility this fight happens is if the UFC really says, ‘OK, you fight him and win, and you’re next for the belt.’ If that doesn’t happen, we’d like the possibility of fighting [Alexander] Volkanovski in December.
Volkanovski hasn’t fought since losing his featherweight title to Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 in February, and his return date and next opponent still remain unconfirmed. However, Lopes still hopes to face the former champion next. Meanwhile, Aljamain Sterling has also expressed interest in a featherweight bout against Lopes. With multiple options on the table, Lopes finds himself in a promising position.

“I think Diego rising to his stardom and his rise in the sport in the UFC has been huge. It’s nothing short of inspiring, to be honest,”
Sterling also mentioned that he had the opportunity to train with Lopes once and found him to be very polite. Now, the Brazilian star has some solid options for his next fight. Who will he choose—Sterling or Evloev? That remains to be seen.
