The UFC Saudi Arabia turned out to be a spectacular affair. The main card saw a ton of knockout victories, and in the end, the MMA community was satisfied with the dose of violent entertainment they received. However, the event was not void of controversies, as many fighters bowed out, and some even missed weight. UFC President Dana White lashed out at Kelvin Gastelum, who missed weight in the Middleweight division.
Dana White “Disappointed” After Kelvin Gastelum Missed Weight
While Kelvin Gastelum won his bout against Daniel Rodriguez even after missing the Welterweight limit, Dana White did not hesitate to say stern words for the American MMA fighter. White made it clear that some are ready to step on the weighing scale and fight on short notice, and then there is Gastelum, who cannot gain weight even after being in camp for many months.
You got kids taking fights on a week’s notice, jumping on cards, coming over here and making weight and Kelvin doesn’t make weight. It’s extremely disappointing.
Kelvin is surely one of the better fighters in the Welterweight and Middleweight divisions, but he has struggled with his weight throughout his career and has missed weight thrice.
He won the first round comfortably by inflicting heavy damage on his opponent, Daniel Rodriguez. The second round was competitive, and he even scored a takedown. The last round was all Gastelum, as he was able to hurt Daniel on multiple occasions and even score multiple takedowns. Kelvin won the unanimous decision in the end. Gastelum, in the post-fight interview, made his intentions clear of winning the UFC gold.
He will surely want to mind his weight in the future, as he does not want to upset the UFC president. Dana did not mince his words and has pushed several big names out of the promotion. It will be interesting to see where Gastelum goes from here.
