Jorge Masvidal is one of the best underdog stories in the UFC. Even though he didn’t win an undisputed title, Masvidal’s three-fight finishing streak in 2019 made him a household name. One current fighter slowly becoming a household name is Sean O’Malley, the bantamweight champion, whose skills Masvidal seems to appreciate.
Masvidal rose to fame in 2019 with high-profile finishes over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz. He was a humungous underdog against Till and Askren. Similarly, Sean O’Malley was a big underdog against Aljamain Sterling when he fought for the title. Like Masvidal, O’Malley upset the odds and became the bantamweight champion.
Jorge Masvidal is a fan of ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley
Masvidal was a recent guest on the Geoge Janko podcast, preluding his anticipated rematch with Diaz, though in the boxing ring. On the podcast, Masvidal delved into various topics, mostly fighting. As such, Masvidal spoke highly of certain fighters, one being O’Malley.
“From a perspective like I’m a fan of his, and I love his style…he’s a fighter. He comes to knock people dead, you know, and I love that…He’s cool as hell, like cool as hell. I like Sean; I’ve liked him since he got on the scene,” said Masvidal about O’Malley.
He has his own style, and he doesn’t, you know, you look at him, too—he just doesn’t look like a fighter. You know what I’m saying? He looks like a skateboarder, like the coolest kid at the party or something. Then he shows up and wack wack wack,” Masvidal added.
O’Malley’s defended his title in his latest fight at UFC 299 against Marlon Vera. Merab Dvalishvili is likely next for O’Malley, potentially at UFC 306. Many consider him the next Conor McGregor. He has potential, but O’Malley’s ceiling remains to be seen.
