Dustin Poirier’s journey in the UFC has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. The Louisiana native has thrilled fans with his gritty performances and electrifying fights for more than 14 years now. But after his recent loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, many wondered if “The Diamond” would hang up his gloves for good.
In a recent chat with MMA Junkie, Mike Brown, Poirier’s long-time coach and confidant, spilled the beans on Poirier’s mindset. It turns out that the former interim champion just can’t quit the fight game.
“He just can’t say goodbye. He’s been saying that for a while… He’s been saying that for [last] 15 fights and keeps beating the best guys in the world… I think he just loves it too much… Once he’s out of the ring and back home, I think he goes stir-crazy. That’s what makes him tick, what’s next?”
Brown painted a picture of a fighter torn between two worlds. On one hand, Poirier has achieved so much already. On the other, the thrill of competition still burns bright in his belly. Apparently, sitting on the couch doesn’t quite compare to trading punches in the octagon.
Mike Brown also floated the idea of a final fight in Louisiana. Now, that would be a hometown throwdown for the ages. Dustin Poirier himself revealed that he would want to end his career where he started. This would be a full-circle moment for one of the best fighters to ever grace the Octagon.
Renato Moicano Outright Refuses To Fight Dustin Poirier
In the world of MMA, fighters usually jump at any opportunity to climb the rankings. But Renato Moicano is singing a different tune when it comes to ‘The Diamond‘. The Brazilian lightweight sensation has been turning heads in the UFC. He’s fresh off a knockout win against Benoit Saint-Denis. Naturally, fans would think he would be chomping at the bit for a shot at the fourth-ranked Poirier.

But Renato Moicano has got a surprise up his sleeve. In a recent chat with Ariel Helwani, Moicano dropped a bombshell. He flat-out refused to fight Dustin Poirier as he believed that there was no point in fighting someone you fully believed would beat you.
“What’s the point of going in a fight that I know I’m going to lose? I train with him all the time. What’s the point of signing the contract of fighting a guy that beats me up in the gym? So there is no point on that.”
Moicano and Dustin Poirier are teammates at American Top Team. They have sparred together many times, and apparently, those sparring sessions haven’t gone too well for the Brazilian. ‘Money’s’ candid admission is refreshing. In a sport where bravado is the norm, his humility stands out like a shining light in the dark.
