Dustin Poirier is one of the longest-tenured athletes in the world. Poirier has been fighting for quite some time in the octagon. He is set to challenge Islam Makhachev for the Lightweight title of the world in the main event of UFC 302. The Louisiana native has been at the Lightweight division’s top for quite some time now.
He is the protege of the legendary head coach Mike Brown, who rules the roost at one of the best MMA camps in the USA, American Top Team. Brown was recently spotted in an interview talking about the impressive run of Poirier to the title the first time around.
Dustin Poirier’s head coach recalls his path to the title shot
Dustin Poirier is set to fight for the title for the third time in his career against Islam. Poirier is one of the most versatile fighters yet to win the UFC gold. His first two outings to claim the UFC title were unsuccessful, as he lost both times via rear naked choke. Brown in an interview given to Weigning In, said,
I think when he fought for the title it was the second longest build up to a title fight.
Brown made it clear Dustin Poirier had to go through one of the roughest MMA trajectories to land a title shot in the octagon for the first time. Only Michael Bisping had a more treacherous path to the UFC gold. Poirier had 23 fights in the octagon and 17 wins. Later, Poirier finally got the shot to win the UFC gold against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Dustin was dominated in the title fight against Khabib and even got submitted in the second title shot against Charles Oliveira.
In a recent interview, Poirier made it clear that the bout against Islam is quite possibly his last title fight in the UFC. The Louisiana native is the heavy underdog in the company’s main event of UFC 302. It will be interesting to see what happens in the main event and how Islam deals with the wrestling of Islam Makhachev.
