Dustin Poirier, the tough-as-nails lightweight contender, has been a mainstay in the UFC for years. Known for his grit and exciting fights, “The Diamond” has captured fans’ hearts worldwide. But as with all great fighters, the question of retirement looms. After his loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, many wondered if we’d seen the last of him. Turns out, the Louisiana native isn’t quite ready to hang up his gloves.
In a recent interview, Poirier dropped some intriguing news about his future plans. He revealed that he has his sights set on bringing the UFC back to his home state of Louisiana. The last time the promotion touched down there was way back in 2015. That was almost a decade ago.
“I will fight again. It’s just how this things unfolds, we’ll see when I do retire. It could be uno mas, it could be dos mas… My goal is to get a fight, get an event here in Louisiana, whether that’s Lafayette, Louisiana, New Orleans. I want to lay the gloves down where I started fighting. That’s my goal. Just opponent availability, what makes sense,” said Poirier while talking to Ariel Helwani.
But hold your horses, fight fans, as this isn’t happening anytime soon. Dustin Poirier revealed that UFC events are planned a year in advance. In the meantime, he is not opposed to taking another fight or two, as he is keeping his options open.
It’s refreshing to see a fighter plan their exit strategy. Too often, fans see legends of the sport hang on too long. Poirier’s approach is measured, and thoughtful, and he knows his limitations as a human going up in age.

In the same interview with Ariel Helwani, Dustin Poirier name-dropped Justin Gaethje when asked about his potential opponents. These two have a history and are tied 1-1 in their previous encounters. A trilogy might be in the making.
“This landscape of fighting is so crazy. Me and Gaethje are 1-1. I would love to do the last fight with him in Louisiana. Our first fight was in his backyard, our second fight was in a neutral ground, the third one, let’s do it in my backyard.”
Both Gaethe and Dustin Poirier are coming off losses in their previous fights. Both of these fighters sit in the top 5 rankings. It is a match made in fighting heaven. However, it remains to be seen whether the UFC matchmakers see it that way.
