As the year winds down, discussions about the UFC’s top moments are heating up, and one of the biggest topics is the coveted ‘KO of the Year’ title. Fans witnessed some insane knockouts in 2024, but Dustin Poirier has weighed in on who deserves the honor. According to Poirier, Ilia Topuria’s stunning knockout of Max Holloway stands out as the clear winner, providing his explanation behind this.
In a recent episode of Good Guy Bad Guy, Poirier joined Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen to share his thoughts on the ‘KO of the Year’ race. DC asked Poirier why he picked Topuria’s knockout of Max Holloway, and DP explained that Holloway’s resilience had always impressed him.
Even after facing top-tier fighters like Poirier, Alexander Volkanovski, and Conor McGregor, Holloway maintained an unbeaten knockout record in 29 bouts. But Topuria’s performance changed that, delivering the knockout that no one else had been able to achieve. Poirier praised Topuria for this historic finish, cementing it as the ‘KO of the Year.’
He said, “Going in there toe-to-toe with Justin Gaethje, with me, with Conor McGregor… with a bunch of guys, taking big shots and always answering the bell, always getting back up, always showing up to the next round. You know, I have never really seen him rocked or stumbled that much. And to get put down for the first time after 30+ UFC fights is to me, knockout of the year.”
Dustin Poirier Teases UFC Comeback
After Poirier’s fight with Islam Makhachev, many thought he had fought his last bout. However, Poirier later admitted that his desire to compete still burns, and he wants to take on one or two more fights. Recently, Khabib Nurmagomedov advised Poirier to retire, but Poirier isn’t ready to step away just yet. Poirier told DC and Sonnen in a recent conversation that he is close to finalizing a deal to return to the UFC, showing he’s not done with the sport.
He said, “I do. Me and the UFC are close on making it happen. Hopefully, I’ll have some news for you guys soon.”
