Dustin Poirier has made an exciting claim about his upcoming fight against Islam Makhachev. Poirier will challenge Makhachev for the lightweight title at UFC 302 in June next month.
For those unaware, Poirier is coming off a spectacular knockout victory over Benoit St-Denis earlier this year. On the flip side, Makhachev was seen in action against Alexander Volkanovski last year.
Moreover, this would be Dustin Poirier’s third shot at the title. Having previously fought against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the belt, he has recently made an interesting claim.
During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Dustin Poirier spoke about how Islam Makhachev might be more of a threat and said:
“I think [Islam’s] submission game, jiu-jitsu wise, is a little more versatile than Khabib. Khabib had some chokes that he did really well, but Islam’s putting himself in, you could say bad positions, going for armbars. Maybe he loses a position but he trusts his wrestling to get it back.”

Dustin Poirier might retire after UFC 302
Dustin Poirier had been in the sport for a very long time. During this time, he fought some of the best that the sport has to offer. With this, he feels that his time might be coming to an end.
Ahead of the fight, ‘Diamond’ has suggested that this could prove to be his last fight. He said:
“It could be [my last fight]. I haven’t made an official decision yet, but it could be. I’ve said this over and over again, I still have a lot of tread on the tires. I can beat these young guys, I just did it… it’s just like, how much do I want to give to this sport, because you don’t ride for free…”
That said, it remains to be seen as to whether Poirier decides to retire or continue fighting following UFC 302
